Financing Your SIPA Education
The SIPA Office of Financial Aid is committed to helping students identify and understand the resources available to finance their graduate education. Students may be considered for funding opportunities offered through SIPA and Columbia University, including scholarships and assistantships.
Institutional funding is limited and highly competitive. Scholarship consideration is based on a holistic review of academic achievement, demonstrated financial need, professional experience, and other factors relevant to the applicant’s candidacy. Most students finance their education through a combination of personal savings, external scholarships or sponsorships, loans, and student employment.
Our financial aid staff is here to assist you throughout the application process. They are available to meet both in person and virtually to connect you to the resources you need to make informed decisions about your educational investment.

SIPA & Columbia University Funding
There are two types of SIPA awards, with options available for both domestic and international applicants:
- Scholarships, which are credited towards tuition and do not require a work commitment.
- Assistantships, which include a work commitment and a salary.
Public Service Scholarship
SIPA is dedicated to supporting students committed to advancing the public good across government, nonprofit, international, and cross-sector work. The Public Service Scholarship is open to domestic and international applicants.
Student Loans & Federal Aid
In addition to institutional funding options, we encourage students to explore and apply for external funding opportunities. International students may borrow from lenders in the US but should not complete a FAFSA, as it is only used to determine eligibility for aid available to US citizens and permanent residents.
